Hinson Colombia Mission 2007

Our team left Portland, OR on July 18th and stayed in Colombia up to August 1st, where we planned to take in a fews days rest in Panama City, Panama. At no time on our trip were we completely without surprise by our host cultures or the situations that unfolded for us. God is good! Praise be to our LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ, who allowed for us to have such a terrific mission and adventure in his love.

PICTURES Pictures are courtesy of anyone who wants to submit. So far, I have only a few within a few different categories.

Pictures: Medellin City of Medellin, Colombia. Downtown Center Projects. Fun. These photos depict an excited bunch of workers ready to paint the town! Well... see for yourself.

Pictures: Boys' Farm See the boys' farm much as we saw it. These pics show much of the happenings there.

Pictures: Armenia Our Road trip and stay in Armenia. Much of what you see in the region is green. But look closely... there are people there too.

Pictures: Panama Our group travels to Panama for sightseeing the canal and much needed R&R, and we got a bonus adventure.

Video: Colombia Team Day 1 and 2. The Hinson team arrives at Portland International Airport early July 18 and flys to Medellin, Colombia by way of Dallas, Miami, then south to Medellin. The first few days in Colombia included meeting with a different team who were just leaving, and then completing assigned tasks to prepare the downtown center for a wedding--which included freshly painting the walls, decorating, setting up sound equipment, and attending.

Video: Colombia Team from Hinson - Fair and Farm. This video starts off with scenes taken from a hike through a national park guided by pastor Brian from the foundation at around 8500 feet above sea level outside of Medellin on Saturday. Then, back at the downtown center, we prepared for and then went to an Art Fair in the cosmopolitan part of downtown Medellin. Sunday morning, we attended church service in the newly painted sanctuary, then visited with Bill Perrow--founder of the farm and downtown center--along with his wife Wanda at their home in Medellin. Later that day, we traveled to the boy's farm which is in the higher elevation farm region about an hour outside of the city. It is there where the team stayed for several days, working on construction of a new barn and playing with and educating the boys.

Video: Hinson's Colombia Team #3 - Still on the Farm, San Pedro. Days 2 through 4 include us playing and eventually getting back to work on the barn project--well, almost. Actually, we eventually enlisted some help from the boys on the farm to help with the project, but not to the point that we detracted from their regular studies. Some of the team got to go with Cristina--the boys' farm administrator--to the local community of San Pedro, where they used the internet connection there to upload videos and check email. Back on the farm, it was 'business as usual' for the boys and the mission team staff.

Video: Medellin to Armenia Colombia. After the farm, the Hinson team took a cross country trip to Armenia, in the heart of the coffee region of Colombia, along with a few local Medellin kids from the foundation and a couple of the boys from the boys' farm. There, we partnered with 2 local churches to reach out to the community with evangelism-style work to encourage the people there. The kids were amazing, each taking part in talking with the locals and handing out invitations to various church-related services and functions to the people living in the area.

Video: Walking Tour of Medellin Catholic Churces. A few of the Colombia team opt to go and tour the Medellin Catholic Churches.

Video: Armenia to Medellin - Last Project. This video starts off with the 7 hour trip back to Medellin from Armenia condensed into less than a minute. The final project the team undertook back at the downtown center was to repaint the walls around the newly referbished pool for the kids there. We had a blast painting and cleaning up the pool water afterward. At the end of the day, some of us went up to the northwest side of Medellin to go paragliding. As was often a theme of our trip, the adreneline didn't stop there. On our way back (not in the video), we were stopped by a military police officer who demanded that we all show our passports. Only one of our party actually had a real passport on their person. After some tactful humoring of the officer by Bryan the pastor of the church, the officer was persuaded that we were all who we said we were, and we were off to the other side of Medellin for our final dinner together in Colombia.

Video: Visiting a Waunaan Village - Part One. Our Group from Hinson Church spent a day at a Waunaan Indian Village located on a river about half way through the Panama Canal. San Antonio Village is the home of Alex Cabezon. Alex and Jennifer Cabezon founded a Children's Home in Panama. Jennifer grew up at Hinson Church.

Bumper-sticker: Heaven is my home. I'm just an adventurer and traveler.
Once in while I have brief periods of consciousness where I will take a job
and work for a time. But ultimately I will be moving on soon.

--Journal entry, day 10.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
because you know that the testing of your faith develops perserverance.
Perserverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete,
not lacking anything.
